Questions
What does a typical session look like?
I take a person-centered approach, which means the session can be as structured or unstructured as it needs to be in order to make progress toward your goals. For structured, we can engage in an evidenced-based therapy (like CBT or DBT). For unstructured, we can focus on processing through talk or play whatever you have for our space. This can also change during the course of treatment, based on your needs at the time.
How often will we meet?
This depends on your need and our mutual availability. The frequency of our sessions may shift throughout the therapeutic relationship, based on your changing needs.
We can meet regularly once per week or bi-weekly, or meet at a different time/date every week.
I may also have flexibility to meet more often than once per week.
In general, therapy is the most effective if done on a regular basis. You can think of it like physical exercise-- you may not see results as quickly if you go to the gym infrequently and sporadically.
How do I know we will be a good fit?
Just like with shoes, it is all about the fit. We don't get along with everyone in our lives, and the same goes with therapy.
I always ask people to give it some time. Often, it is less about the therapist, and more about the discomfort with sitting tough feelings or with the readiness to delve into deep stressors.
If there is every something that I am doing or not doing that you are curious about, please bring it to our space.
Therapy is different than other types of professional relationships you have had (often with a power differential). My goal is to work to understand your thoughts and feelings.
And, if we have attempted to work through tough moments, and if it does not appear to be a good fit, I will work to guide you to a better fit.
Who do you work with?
I work alongside individuals (children, adolescents, young adults, and adults) to heal, grow, reflect, and change. I have worked, and feel confident, with a wide variety of presentations and diagnoses:
No prior mental health treatment or diagnoses (as well those who are not interested on focusing on labels)
Individuals new to therapy, returning to therapy, or those who have been on the journey for a while
Depressive Disorders (such as Major Depressive Disorder)
Anxiety Disorders (such as Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, or Generalized Anxiety)
Personality Disorders (such as Borderline Personality Disorder)
Mood Disorders (such as Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder or Bipolar Disorder)
Substance Use Disorders (including process addictions)
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Psychosis
Neurodevelopmental Disorders (such as Intellectual and Developmental Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD)
How do I pay for therapy?
There are several payment options, with and without insurance. Please visit the "Payment" page for the most up-to-date information. If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email at anabelle@ardtherapy.com.
